RETURN OF THE MANGROVES

Return of the Mangroves follows the Mangrove Action Project (MAP) team to El Salvador to assess the health of mangroves in the Bay of Jiquilisco. MAP Co-Founder Alfredo Quarto and Jim Enright return to the bay 12 years after they conducted a mangrove restoration training, and with the help of Dr Laura Michie discover the impact of the training on the local people and the mangroves of the bay.

After a period of mangrove loss, communities are collaborating with scientists to gain new skills and knowledge to help reverse the decline, for future generations.

The Bay of Jiquilisco, located on the Pacific coast of El Salvador, is home to one of the largest and most diverse mangrove forests in Central America. The mangroves in the bay cover approximately 25,000 hectares and are critical to the health of the bay’s ecosystem, as well as the well-being of the local communities. Despite their importance, the mangroves in the bay are still under threat.
